One Icon for All Feeds?

Recently on the IE Blog they announced that they were going to use the same feed icon that Firefox uses. I think that using the icon in IE7 will be great for users and to at least get some consistency between the various browsers. To take it a step further, Matt Brett developed a site for promoting the new icon. I think that it is a great site that can have some influence for others to adopt the icon in their technologies.

The one concern that I have has to do with visibility of what it stands for. Yes, I know what it means, but I am am a syndication whore. But, will my Dad know what it means? It is people like my Dad who, in my opinion, we should be worried about. We should be worrying about those who are new to syndication and have no clue what it is or what it is about. The icon should make it easier for them, not more difficult.

Personally, I don’t think that Real Simple Syndication or Atom is ubiquitous enough yet to go from to . I think that the new icon should be incorporated into how syndication is presented on the web, but not completely replace it. Not yet. Over time, as syndication becomes more ubiquitous, I think that it might be able to be used on it’s own. But, I just don’t think that we’re at the point yet in web syndication to let the icon speak for itself. We still have people like my Dad who don’t know what the current icons mean.

WordPress 2.0 RC3

The WordPress development team has been hard at work and they have released a stellar new release to their blogging software. Currently, this blog is running it, but I bet you can’t tell the difference. But, when you get a look at the admin panel, that’s where all the great additions have occured.

Gone is the tired and old interface, and in comes a brand new look and feel to the admin UI. In addition, many more modern techniques are used to show/hide different aspects of the admin panel. This is the most noticeable change that users will see, and that many will enjoy.

As for post writing goes, now there is an embedded text editor. So, gone are the days of hand coding entries in HTML (but, you still can if you want). Overall, it’s a great update and many props to to Matt and the WordPress development team.

As a side note, do NOT use the Google Toolbar’s spell check with the text editor enabled, it will embed all the html into the text editor. But, if you disable the text editor, you might be able to get around it.

A Very INFO Christmas 2005

Group Shot Last night was the 2nd annual “A Very INFO Christmas”. I was a little concerned about the turnout. Not that people wouldn’t show up, but that I couldn’t fit them all. But, I somehow managed to fit 17 people into my place and feed them all dinner, with the help of Jamie and those who offered up pot luck dishes (thanks!).

Needless to say, it was good times and I’m glad that so many people turned out. But, I have to say that the best part of the night was probably the white elephant gift exchange, just because of the randomness and types of gifts brought by people. But, overall, it was a really fun night and I hope that those who attended had fun as well.

If you were there last night, you know I took some photos. I’ve put them in a set as well and tagged all of them with “INFO Christmas 2005”. Also, I realize some of the colors in the pictures look less than flattering, but I’m working on it.

Seattle Creations

Today I decided that I wanted a new desktop image for my new LCD, but nothing really fits the 1920×1200 resolution, so I made my own. Below are two of the wallpapers that I made today and I’ve sized them for sharing with those who do not have a screen resolution as high as 1920×1200. Feel free to use them on your own desktop!

I’m Official

Well, I’m an official Washingtonian now. I got my license today and that is the final piece of “Ryan’s Washington Jigsaw Puzzle”. Now, I currently live, vote, work, and drive in the sate of Washington. Gone are the days of my conversation piece, my Minnesota license. It was a good ride Minnesota, but Washington won’t let me go… yet.
